Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy represents the cutting edge of mental health treatment. Clinical trials studying the efficacy of MDMA and psilocybin are yielding promising results; and ketamine has already established itself as a safe and effective component of treatment for some clients.
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a unique therapeutic approach that involves the use of ketamine, a medication that has been traditionally used as an anesthetic. In this context, however, it is administered in lower, controlled doses to facilitate a therapeutic experience. The goal of KAP is to enhance the effectiveness of the therapy session by promoting a relaxed and open state of mind. It’s like having a companion on your therapeutic journey, helping you explore your thoughts and emotions more deeply.
During a KAP session, the therapist guides you through the experience while the ketamine allows for a heightened level of introspection and self-reflection. It can create a sense of detachment from the usual thought patterns, making it easier to explore and process challenging emotions or memories. Many clients describe it as a way to break through mental barriers and gain new insights into their lives. It’s important to note that KAP is always conducted in a controlled and safe environment with a qualified therapist, ensuring a supportive space for self-discovery.
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and its suitability varies for each individual. It can be particularly helpful for those struggling with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, or PTSD. The therapy aims to provide a unique and transformative experience, helping clients navigate their inner landscape with a fresh perspective and paving the way for positive changes in their mental well-being.
Some clients are surprised to learn that Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is available through telemental health, but this innovative approach can yield significant therapeutic benefits. Research into KAP delivered via teletherapy skyrocketed after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has shown it to be just as effective as traditional, in-person sessions. Studies have found comparable outcomes in terms of symptom reduction and treatment efficacy, indicating that clients can experience transformative healing experiences with KAP through virtual platforms. With the convenience and accessibility of telemental health, clients can access this cutting-edge treatment modality from the comfort of their own homes, receiving evidence-based care that supports their mental health and wellbeing. I am committed to providing a safe and supportive environment throughout the process, ensuring that your experience is both beneficial and empowering.
As a psychotherapist, it is outside my scope of practice to prescribe, administer, or direct the use of ketamine. However, I am able to partner with medical providers in order to facilitate this process in a way that prioritizes safety, legality, ethics, and effectiveness. For clients who have already arranged to receive KAP through an outside clinic or other entity, I am also able to assist with post-treatment processing and integration.
Interest in psychedelic assisted psychotherapy, including KAP, has been growing rapidly as evidence of the effectiveness continues to mount. As the field continues to develop, it remains vital that clients receive treatment from clinicians who have been properly trained. I receive my training and professional consultation through the Polaris Insight Center.
I’m always happy to discuss how KAP can potentially help clients reach their goals. Please reach out if you’d like to schedule some time to chat.
